This past weekend my husband and I went to the 2012 Miami International Art Fair aboard the SeaFair. The boat itself was pretty spectacular. I loved the way they converted it into a beautiful gallery space. The unconventional venue was the perfect location for the all the amazing work on display.

My favorite pieces were the ones by Venezuelan optical and kinetic artist Jesus Soto. His work included a couple of sculptures and paintings that incorporated kinetic elements. I loved the simplicity of the pieces and the way they drew you in. The detail in the artwork was simply perfect. I really enjoy pieces that feel effortless, but when you look closely the refinement of the detail is what makes them special. I relate to this type of artwork since it’s what I attempt to do with my own work.

San Salvador's Cathedral Before and After

On December 29th, 2011 El Salvador lost one of its most iconic pieces of art. Since 1997, “La Armonía de mi Pueblo” the name given to the ceramic tile mosaic by Salvadorean Artist Fernando Llort was destroyed by the country’s Catholic Church. Their excuse: “It was damaged and it was posing a threat to those who visit the cathedral”. The piece had been commissioned to the artist when efforts where made to reconstruct and restore the church. Also it had been declared part of the national cultural heritage by the appropriate officials.

Some people are of the opinion that since the artwork was located on the church, it belonged to it and therefore they could do whatever they pleased with it. Whatever the excuse anyone tries to give to defend or justify the removal of the piece is offensive. As an artist I feel insulted and as a Salvadorean ashamed. Ignorance and disrespect is all I get from these actions. It saddens me to see this happen, especially since I have always been influenced by the work of the artist. He is one of the few well-known artists in the country and seeing this happen to his work makes me realize that El Salvador is a country that lacks culture. It seems that everything that identifies and makes the country unique is not appreciated by its officials, since they are unable to protect it from those who wish to change it.

The worst part of the whole ordeal is that the mosaic was completely destroyed. There was no attempt to try to salvage any of the pieces, so that maybe it could be relocated to another area or even a museum. The actions the Catholic Church took towards the removal of the piece were wrong and shows the lack of respect that they have towards the cultures they touch.

The mosaic was what made San Salvador’s Cathedral special and different. Now it looks like any other church out there, without character and anything that makes it Salvadorean.

Home page from my old wedsite

Home page from my old website

After thinking over and over about changing my site I decided to go for it! My old one was created from scratch in HTML, using some CSS and sprinkles of JAVA here and there. However, the biggest problem was editing it and keeping it up to date. Also it was my first site ever, which initially started as a project in college. A project that went through a million transformations, that never really satisfied, since working on it was SO time consuming!

Late last year at work, I began learning about WordPress while working with it and I must say I have fallen in love with it. It’s super flexible, easy to use and a real time saver. Also I have never blogged before and really wanted to, so making my new site a WordPress one gave me an easy solution to both.

I want to be posting regularly here, probably a bit of everything: thoughts, updates, news, inspirations, and really anything that interests me (I promise to try to stick to art/design type of stuff). I hope someone stumbles upon it and enjoys, but if not I guess I’m happy with being able to have a place where to “organize” my ideas 🙂

Also if someone reads this, thank you for stopping by! Hope you enjoy my NEW SITE!
